What is a public adjuster?

There are three types of insurance adjusters you may come across in Illinois: Public Insurance Adjusters, also known as Private Adjusters, are those who work for you and have no affiliation with insurance companies.

Independent Adjusters are those who contract their services to insurance companies and work on their behalf. Company Adjusters, or Staff Adjusters, work for the insurance company directly, so their priority is to the company’s bottom line. Public Adjusters are the only type of claims adjusters that work on behalf of the policyholder and fight for you during the insurance claims settlement process.

A Public Adjuster is an insurance claims adjuster who advocates for the policyholder in appraising and negotiating a claimant’s insurance claim. Aside from attorneys and the broker of record, Public Adjusters licensed by state departments of insurance are the only type of claims adjuster that can legally represent the rights of an insured during an insurance claim process.

A Public Adjuster’s involvement is essential to ensuring that proper identification and valuation of the loss is recognized by the insurance carrier.

Most Public Adjusters charge a percentage of the settlement. Primarily, public claims adjusters appraise the damage, prepare an estimate and other claim documentation, read the policy of insurance to determine coverage, and negotiate with the insurance company’s adjuster.
